HailHistory™ Reports

HailHistory reports are intended for searches of extended periods of time, for a single location, where the date of a hail event(s) is unknown. The HailHistory process is optimized to provide a quick analysis of the presence or absence of hail as detected by WDT's United States Hail Data Archive (USHDA). The HailHistory report is a summary of the dates of hail activity greater than or equal to 0.75" but less than 2.00" in diameter and hail 2.00" in diameter and greater.

The USHDA is a database of radar-derived hail activity that has been collected daily, processed, analyzed, and stored since 2003 for hail storms across the continental United States.

Until the advent of HailHistory, the only economical source of long-term hail information was the archive of human observations of hail maintained by the National Weather Service (NWS). Known as Local Storm Reports (LSR) data, this source is comprised of human observations of hail submitted by a mix of trained and untrained individuals (general public) who volunteer this information to the NWS. As a courtesy, the NWS collects and re-distributes this data; however, they provide no quality assurance or verification as to the accuracy of these LSRs. Since this is purely a volunteer process, there is no guarantee of coverage or consistency in the data collection process across the entire US.

HailHistory reports are recommended for engineers, contractors, insurance adjusters and underwriters interested in long-term histories of hail events at a single location. HailHistory reports can be ordered for any dates back to January 1, 2004. If you have a known date of hail and/or require an address-specific hail verification report, please see our HailTrax product offering.

Product Summary

  • Extended search timeframes of hail activity for a single address/location spanning weeks, months or years
  • Queries WDT's USHDA of radar derived hailswaths and displays dates which the address fell within an area of hail greater than or equal to 0.75" but less than 2.00" in diameter and areas of hail 2.00" and greater
  • Summary statement lists the date(s) of hail activity categorized by hailswath size
  • Order on-line and view your purchased HailHistory report within seconds of ordering
  • All HailHistory orders are stored to your Weather Forensics account in .pdf format for 365 days

The meteorological ingredients that make up the USHDA dataset include NEXRAD radar data for the continental United States which is then processed and filtered through a proprietary WDT algorithm and then quality assured by our team of expert meteorologists. See a sample HailHistory report.

Application

HailHistory reports are optimized for long search periods, at a single location, where there is an unknown hail date(s). HailHistory reports can be used as a stand-alone report or in conjunction with our HailTrax report when date and address-specific verification is needed. HailHistory can narrow down potential dates of hail activity when ordering a year's worth of HailTrax reports is not practical or cost-effective.
